BOOK CLUB: WHEN WE WERE ARABS
We are excited to announce online bookclub in collaborating with @inbetweencollective as part of their ongoing Book Club. We will be reading When We Were Arabs: A Jewish Family’s Forgotten History by Massoud Hayoun.
Retelling the stories of his grandparents, Hayoun weaves a memoir following the two Jewish Arab families as they emigrate from Morocco and Tunisia to Egypt, Palestine, France, and finally, the United States. He explores the weaponisation of Jewish identity for political gain, writing “I am Arab because it is what [we] have been told not to be, for generations, to stop us from living in portentous solidarity with other Arabs”. Through personal anecdotes and vivid prose, he delves into Arab identity, Jewish identity, and takes us back to a time when these two were not considered binaries.
We will be hosting biweekly Zoom meetings, the dates will be set after we receive all sign-ups. You have until Monday evening to sign up!
